RUMPLE 2010: BADGER BASH |

Standing in the shadows of greatness, Rumple 2010 took its surreal show on the road once again, inflicting mayhem on the sleepy resort town of Lake Geneva, WI. Rumplers descended from all points on the compass with ACE and Jor-El flying in from the east coast, the Bank representing Seattle, D'oh making the drive north from St. Louis and the NoDak 5 bringing the limo in from just south of the north pole. Of course, Michiganders came strong, meeting up at a nondescript rest stop, thanks Green Mountain, to caravan around Chicago. And, last but not least, Dutch hiked about 6 miles out of the Montana mountains to complete our motley lot. Like every Rumple that has come before and likely every one that will come to pass in the future, much of the Rumple stayed the same and much was different. We had some great courses and some local fun, as always, but perhaps the most prominent difference was that only Dutch and Thunder kept the streak alive as the only Rumplers to attend each and every event. Previously on that list, both Gun Range and the German took a year off in 2010. We don't expect that their absence will persist in 2011. |
The Golf:
We kicked off 2010 in another lasting tradition, the Thursday practice round, a loose parkland tract that was fine for some beers and bashing the ball around, shaking off the travel and, for some, the rust. We split 2010's rounds between two excellent resorts in Lake Geneva, WI; Geneva National (Palmer, Player, Trevino) and Grand Geneva (Brute, Highlands). They proved to be a solid challenge, punishing at times (I am looking at you Brute), but mainly solid American golf variety including parkland, championship and links formats. We also made some changes, eliminating adjusted handicaps during the event and allowing Rumplers to play from two sets of tees, both pilots that we intended to continue. As Rumplers attacked the courses, Jor-El posted an uncharacteristic 92 that even his final round 74 couldn't balance out, letting the Bank notch another Raw victory and to become the first Rumpler to defend a title. NoDaker Big Stick played 1500+ golf holes between Rumple 2009 & 2010, and it showed. He ran away with the Grand title by a margin of 15 strokes, the biggest blowout in Rumple history to date.

The Story: If you continue to read the story of the Rumple over time, you might be thinking that age and maturity will slow us down at some point. So far, that has not been the case. For instance, some of the Rumplers dropped in on the Pirate's Cove (pictured above) to mix it up with the locals. A short time later, terrible karaoke replaying in their heads and Jaeger in their bloodstreams, they returned to the rest of the group to mixed reviews. Green Mountain had fended off a cougar attack, who we bumped into the following day on the course (Smooveskin) and Thunder spent several hours torturing Jor-El, the NoDakers and the Lake Lawn staff, inspired by, well, who knows what (Knuckleskin). I suppose it's not that we'll never learn, but rather we are slow learners. Wouldn't you want to be held back another year with these underachievers? |
