RUMPLE 2007: HOMECOMING

HOMECOMING

Treetops Resort

Gaylord, MI

21 Rumplers descended upon Treetops Resort to take on their 4 courses and mark their place in Rumple history. It was the first event in the home state of many Rumplers, which made for reasonable commutes and our biggest crew yet.

We had some nice condos overlooking one of the courses and had the chance to play Threetops.

The Rumple added a couple of single digit handicappers and a golfer who would come to define the Rumple bogey (double par, every hole, three straight rounds.) We also added a few traditions...
  • No sleep until the last man arrives
  • No gimmie putts on Sunday
  • Missed Tee Time? Too Bad.
  • Beeramid
We grilled on the decks, "lost" a golf cart, and learned about the Sparr Mall, which defies description. The courses were the epitome of northern Michigan golf. Crisp, dry breezes through tall stands of pines and rolling fairways, weaving through forests, over hills and dunes.

The Golf:

The golf courses were in great shape, with the exception of the Masterpiece. A great course, but over-played and under construction.

Perhaps the most remarkable was Threetops, their Par 3 course. It had vertigo inducing elevation changes and was a lot of fun to play. A great warm-up fo rthe marathon of golf to follow.

Two Rumple rookies made their mark, scoring in the 70's for the first time in Rumple history. Another rookie set the standard for golf depravity. Double-Par (Rumple Max, aka Rumple Bogey) for every hole. 142, three rounds in-a-row.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...

In the end, sweet swinging Jor-El took home the raw title, pimping the latest in Gilligan fashions (see below). Sandbagger "Thunder" bounced back from the trampoline incident in 2006 to become the second member of the Won Both Titles Club (see Dutch 2004/2005 & Jor-El 2006/2009).

The Story:

We went at it pretty hard in 2007. Lack of sleep, size of the group and difficulty of courses made for a bit of a rough ride, but the Rumple soldiered on and grinded out another stellar event.

The venue was a true Michigan beauty and we took full advantage. We also learned that having a small commute and plenty of time for lunch has pluses and minuses. Note the first missed tee times in rumple history (The German) and D'oh having a 36 stroke swing in the wrong direction from AM to PM rounds on Saturday.

True Rumple spirits were added to the fold and journeymen maintained the commitment to preserve the legacy that is the Rumple Invitational. Whether it be the all-for-one effort to build the Beeramid or the Plack of Back & Milds from the Sparr Mall (anyone missing a bear?), 2007 gave as much back to the Rumple lore as any year and will be recalled fondly for years to come.
