Rumple 2004: Wild Wing Weekend |
|
Wild Wing Plantation Myrtle Beach, SC |
By the end of the morning round we were drenched and scrambled home to change and return. We made it with only a few minutes to spare.
After the first 36, guys were worn out so we ordered some pizza and drank ourselves to sleep on Friday night. The next morning came quickly and we were off again to the course. Starting on a Scottish links-style course (mounds & heather, but no sea) our play was slowed by mounding that blocked our view of the fairway. Doubly difficult since it was cart path only. A course clearly not designed with all scenarios in mind. |
The afternoon round on Saturday made for some interesting lies as the Hummingbird course was designed with natural areas that crossed most fairways about 250 yards off the tee. The course itself was beautiful and allowed carts on the fairway, a welcome reprieve.
After pulling off the course from our afternoon round, we decided to hang out at the clubhouse for some drinks, then go home and prepare for our night in Myrtle Beach proper. On Saturday night we cruised into Myrtle Beach. A peculiar place it is indeed. If you go to the tourist areas, Myrtle Beach is very commercial and hosts numerous chain restaurants, strip clubs, etc. We were on a search for a little more local flavor. |
We stopped at one bar and found, what else, bar food. So, after some contemplation and a drink, we decided to look elsewhere, but not before we encountered the karaoke. I guess an open air bar invites all sorts of folks from all stages of disrepair, but this one had some of the most unintelligible singing I have ever heard.
Anyway, we moved on to a local spot and settled in for drinks and seafood. The food was decent and the hot sauce soaked oyster-shooters were a nice touch, thanks D’ohogne. By the end of our night, Bird Mountain did not disappoint, climbing into the rowboat suspended outside the restaurant. Anchors Away! next page |
