1. What is the Rumple?

In 2002 Brian Larsen and Mike Sowash kicked around the idea of a buddies golf tournament that would be a great excuse to get all our fellas together, once a year, no matter where life has transplanted us. To drink and, of course, play golf. The Rumple was born.

2. Where do you play?

The initial concept was to play in a different state every year to try and get a look at America's golf variety. In 2009, for the third straight year, we will be playing at a different location, but staying in our home state (many of us) of Michigan. Look for a heavy lobby to Wisconsin in 2009.

3. How do you decide the dates?

Initially, the tournament was in October, because we were playing southern states and wanted the trip to be the summation of our 6 month Michigan golf season. Since moving north, the dates shifted to August, because up north Michigan golf in October can mean snow. We'll be sticking to August as long as we stay north and will plan a weekend in the middle of the month to avoid Labor Day plans/start of school for those with and without children.

4. Who goes to this trip?

The million dollar question... Well, let's see, mainly it is composed of alumni from the University of Michigan. 6 have been fraternity brothers, 5 current/former employees of University of Michigan Golf Course, 5 North Dakotans, some brothers and fathers, 4 golf buddies from NYC. It runs the gamut really, they defy definition in more ways than one.

5. Are you guys any good?

The short answer is no, we aren't, not by any stretch. The Rumple rules dictate that you pick up your ball once double par is reached on any hole, affectionately called the 'Rumple Bogey'. That number has been reached 4 times for all 18 holes in a single round. Yup, 142, it happened, more than once. That said, we got a few guys who can reach the 70s and a bunch between 80-100. We take all comers and being serious about your game during this trip is one way to not get invited back.
